AquaScan sidescan – SonarWiz 5 Integration Testing

This week I (John Gann) visited some old friends Mike Curran and Russ Philibert at SyQwest to add support for their new AquaScan sidescan sonar and the older HydroBox  dual frequency sounder.  The AquaScan is a 200kHz, CW pulse, low-cost sidescan sonar system that produced good imagery in the shallow waters near the Newport Bridge.  See image to below, Figure 1:

This image is raw data with slant range correction applied but no gains applied in SonarWiz 5.  The sonar was set to 80m range scale.

We were operating from Mike Curran’s 25 ft single outboard open fishing boat.  The sonar was flown by hand (no winch) and except for the time we dragged the fish along the bottom, the sonar was flying at about 3-5m off the seafloor. See Mike in operation, below left, Figure 2:

The AquaScan electronics are about half the size of a cigar box and runs on 12VDC which was handy since Mike’s inverter was soaked during the recent hurricane that battered New England.  The SonarWiz 5 laptop was setup down in the small cabin area that smelled similar to my hockey bag also thanks to Hurricane Irene!

We started out the day at the “crack of noon” following the normal mis-steps that seem to preface any boat outing and of course the required stops at Dunkin’ Donuts and Subway.

With Captain Russ Philibert at the helm (see Figure 4.), we headed out of scenic Newport first trying to survey at the mouth of the bay. A combination of a small boat and large seas failed to yield the beauty records we were hoping for.  So after a couple of hours of bouncing around we headed for the harbor but not before scanning the wreck at long range.  We finished the day inside the harbor dodging tourist boats and acquired a few records similar to the one at the top of this document (see Figure 5).

Hydrobox sub-bottom – SonarWiz 5 Integration Testing

Next up was the HydroBox.  SonarWiz 5 already supports acquisition and post-processing of the StrataBox and Bathy 2010 systems from SyQwest but owing to recent customer requests, we have now added the HydroBox system as well.  HydroBox is a simple dual frequency sounder, but recording in SonarWiz 5 provides the ability to view and record the complete echogram from both channels and of course the survey line and navigation services too.  SonarWiz 5 records the HydroBox data in a conforming SEG-Y format (See Figure 6.)

Best Practices at CTI: Somewhere over the Atlantic

It’s been a rough week.  After being gone for 18 days in Europe with no exercise (my fault there) I hit the office with all the blood shot energy I could muster.  One good thing about long distance air travel is I get a lot of work done and my phone doesn’t ring.  The downside is that my body is starting to resemble the mirror image of seat 12-A.

OK, so I came home with a few new ideas for SonarWiz enhancements and a few more broken things that I fixed somewhere over the Atlantic.  So, it’s release time, right?  In case you’re new to CTI you might not know that the frequency with which we post updates is only slightly less often than the time it takes for the earth to take a spin once on it’s axis. I’m exaggerating but have a look here to get the facts.  Is this a good thing or a bad thing that we post so many updates?  It certainly doesn’t seem to be “Best Practice” according to the rules of software engineering. Swedish Navy Training Gothenburg Harbor, Sweden

Our 2-day training for the Swedish Navy started bright and early on April 11. Our sales rep Mikael Ringdal from CA Clase was waiting for us at the hotel at 8:00am and we were off to the navy vessel. Our plan was to be aboard the navy vessel 2 hours before the students arrived to have plenty of time to work out all of the kinks. Yeah, right. Does that ever work?

Our C-MAX sonar interface did not work initially. It turned out that the SDK we were using had some serious buffering problems. After a quick call to C-MAX we got the new SDK, recompiled and linked over lunch and we were good to go for the afternoon session. Thanks to the folks at C-MAX for their quick response.

Because the C-MAX wouldn’t work for us in the morning we switched over to the Stefan Hultqvist “Sea Log” analog sidescan. This sonar was run on the coast guard’s pelican case system and integrated through CTI’s analog interface. We surveyed a few areas of the Gothenburg harbor area until the lunch break.

Training at Hampshire & Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology Southampton, England

After wrapping up a good week at Ocean Business in Southampton, Brandon Mason and the good folks at Hampshire & Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology agreed to host a training event for SonarWiz 5.  I think we had between 30-40 students in a university computer lab just across the parking lot from the OB conference.  We had quite a diverse group of attendees ranging geographically from Russia, Spain, France, Finland and of course the UK.

Mike Brissette led the training class through a record breaking pace covering all of the sidescan features in one very full day.  We all blew off some steam at the White Star Tavern which served up some fine brews including a personal favorite: Doom Bar named for an “infamous sand bank in Cornwall”.
