CTIs SonarWiz.MAP Featured on October 2006 Cover of Sea Technology Magzine The cover of the October 2006 issue of Sea Technology featured an image created with mosaics exported from Chesapeake Technology, Inc.s software SonarWiz.MAP. CTIs customer, Garry Kozak of L3-Communications, Klein Associates of Salem, New Hampshire, gathered the data and assembled the images for the magazine. The raw data was generated with a Klein System 3000 in Lake Constance, Germany and logged as XTF files on SonarWiz.MAP 4. The sonar was operated on a 800 meter range scale ( 1600 meter swath) at the 100 kHz frequency. Towfish altitude was an extreme 240 meters above the lake bottom. This was because only a short lightweight towcable was available, and it did not allow getting the towfish down to a reasonable altitude (10% of sonar range) above the lake bottom. A new mosaic project was created in SonarWiz.MAP 4 and the 5 xtf line files were imported to create a mosaic.
Due to the extreme altitude of the towfish, automatic sonar bottom tracking did not function so manual altitude correction was done with SonarWiz.MAP 4 and this worked perfectly. A bathymetry chart was provided by the customer as a TIFF with World File. This was imported into SonarWiz.MAP 4 as a background base map. Now the sonar mosaic was layered onto the bathymetry basemap, and then this was saved as a high resolution TIFF with World File. This was then converted using SonarWiz.MAP 4 to a Google Earth KMZ file. The KMZ file was displayed in Google Earth and using Google Earths rotation controls the image was manipulated into the desired perspective for the SeaTechnology front cover. Data collection and SonarWiz.MAP 4 processing performed by Garry Kozak. Sea Technology bills itself as the worldwide information leader for marine business, science & engineering. For more than 42 years, the monthly magazine has been the ocean/marine industry's recognized authority for ocean design, engineering and application of equipment and services in the global ocean community. Sea Technology is distributed worldwide in more than 100 countries by management, engineers, scientists and technical personnel working in industry, government and educational research institutions. Subscribers are involved with oceanographic research, fisheries management, offshore oil and gas exploration and production, undersea defense including antisubmarine warfare, ocean mining and commercial diving.
